Add A Self-Timer To The Stock iOS Camera App With The CamTime Cydia Tweak

The iPhone 4/4S camera hardware is top of the line, but the built-in iOS camera app is not so much. The camera app in iOS provides basic functionality and that doesn’t even include a self-timer. All you can do is turn on/off the flash, enable grid view or HDR and obviously take a picture or shoot a video. Even some entry-market phones have more options than the iOS camera app!
CamTime Cydia Tweak
A self-timer on your camera can be very helpful, as you can capture photos without actually having to hold the camera. With the new CamTime Cydia tweak, you can finally add a self-timer to your iOS Camera app. Unlike regular self-timers that have standard presets for 5, 10 or 20 seconds, CamTime has no presets whatsoever. You can set in your custom number of seconds for the picture to be taken in. This means you can set the timer for say, 500,000 seconds, leave for lunch and then come back and have your picture taken. Keep in mind that you can only set the time in seconds and there are not any options to configure.
CamTime BigBoss Free
Once the tweak is installed, a timer button will appear next to the shutter, which when tapped asks you to set the time in seconds. The tweak works well on the iPhone 4S and the latest iOS 5.1.1 firmware. CamTime is currently available in the BigBoss repo for free. Need a self-timer on your iOS Camera app? Then this is the tweak for you!

Dash Multitasking Replacement Now Available On Cydia For iPhone And iPod Touch

Dash is self-described multitasking revamp for the iPhone and iPod touch which replaces the standard multitasking tray. Instead of putting icons of previously used apps in a tray below the screen, Dash allows users to swipe between cards which represent open apps.
These cards contain screenshots and icons of the apps they represent. Users flip between open cards with swipes, on a SpringBoard-like interface. The animation between the cards can be set under Settings -> Dash -> animation. There’s there basic scroll animation, animations which mimic coverflow and time machine, and two others labelled Rotary and Cylinder.
The activation method can be set as a double-press of the home button in order to replace the multitasking tray, but if can also be set to activate through a different method if you still want to use the default app switcher from time to time.
It is important to keep in mind that multitasking tweaks have been available in Cydia for a long time, and Dash is a new addition to the genre. The current gold standard for multitasking on the iPhone is Zephyr, by Chpwn. Zephyr is more transparent than Dash, as Zephyr doesn’t need to be called up; instead it allows users to directly swipe between open apps. If you’re using an iPad, you may be more interested in Quasar, which allows for actual side-by-side multitasking in separate panes.

Dash is only $1.99 and early in development. It’s different enough from Zephyr that I wouldn’t call it a copy-cat app, and it might be what you’re looking for in a multitasking tweak. You can find dash in the ModMyi repository.
What sort of multitasking do you use? The default method, a custom tray, gestures, true side-by-side multitasking, or do you disable multitasking altogether to save battery life? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Apple vs Samsung Verdict is in: Samsung Ordered to Pay $1 Billion in Damages to Apple

0
For over a few years now, Apple and Samsung has not only been fighting in the market place, but also in the courtroom. Both the companies accused each other of infringing patents. The jury in this landmark case between the world’s two largest phone manufacturers has reached a verdict in just three days of deliberations.

Legal teams from both sides were given 25 hours each to present their case. Apple presented different scenarios where Samsung slavishly copied their design and infringed their patents, hence demanded $2.5 Billion in damages due to the lost sales revenue. A nine person jury was asked to complete comprehensive 20-pages document containing 700+ questions.
The Verge was in the court room and live blogged the decisions. And the verdict is, Samsung has been found guilty of infringing on several Apple’s patents.
Almost all Samsung devices infringe all three Apple software patents. Galaxy Tab did NOT infringe the iPad design patent. Samsung will have to pay $1.05 Billion ($1,051,855,000) in damages to Apple: $57 million for Samsung’s Prevail handset, $44.8 million for the Mesmerize, $3.3 million for the Replenish, $1 million for the Samsung Transform.

As per the verdict none of the Apple devices infringe on any of Samsung Patents. So, Apple doesn’t owe anything to Samsung. In this landmark tech case in US, Apple has certainly achieved the major victory and has secured its intellectual property.

NFC Chip Spotted in Leaked iPhone 5 Front Assembly?

1
Apple.pro has posted some leaked pictures of what they believe is the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip tucked down under the metal chassis, as shown in the photo below…

New images thought to be of the front casing of the upcoming iPhone 5 show a metallic square chassis never seen before in any iPhone, prompting some to speculate the mystery part is an NFC chip.
The purported NFC chip is located next to the unit’s front-facing camera. Apple is rumored to have swapped the locations of the next gen iPhone front-facing camera and IR proximity sensor, thus leaving a sizable room to the left of the earpiece.
MacOtakara, a Japanese Apple blog, notes that the square component covered by EMI shielding is in line with the dimensions of currently available NFC packages like NXP’s 5 millimeter-by-5 millimeter solution.
First the NFC Chip references were found in the code of the hardware dumps from upcoming iPhone prototypes, so the chances of Apple including NFC capabilities in iPhone 5 are very high.

By storing credit card, bank, or other digital payment information on a device, NFC can securely conduct transactions with other authorized devices. NFC would allow iPhone users to share files with other iOS devices.
It is believed that NFC introduction in iPhone will be a game changing feature and a big part of the Sept 12th iPhone 5 unveiling. iPhone 5 will be loaded with iOS 6 which is claimed to bring 200+ new features. Checkout: iOS 6 Features.

Apple Seeks Ban on 8 Samsung Devices in the U.S.

0
Last week, Jury found several of Samsung devices infringing on Apple’s patents and awarded $1 billion in demages to Apple from Samsung. Following this win over Samsung in a US court, Apple is now seeking a ban on 8 samsung devices in the US…

A notice filed by the Cupertino company with the court lists the devices it wants to ban from US sales which includes several Galax S and S II variants. The jury found 28 Samsung devices guilty of infringing on Apple’s patent, however, Apple is seeking an injunction on 8 devices because most of the other devices are already out of the product-life-cycle. The targeted 8 Samsung devices include:
  • Galaxy S 4G
  • Galaxy S2 (AT&T)
  • Galaxy S2 (Skyrocket)
  • Galaxy S2 (T-Mobile)
  • Galaxy S2 Epic 4G
  • Galaxy S Showcase
  • Droid Charge
  • Galaxy Prevail
The Verge reports:
Despite having received a finding of infringement from the jury on most of the products in play in case, it looks like Apple is only going after eight. This isn’t terribly surprising given the fact that many of the products in the case are no longer available in the US.
It’s interesting to note here that Google’s pure Android smartphone: Galaxy Nexus, which is manufactured by Samsung, in not present on the list. Separately, Bloomberg notes that Apple is seeking a ban on the cellular version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. Notably, this is the tablet that the U.S.-based jury believed did not infringe Apple’s patents.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 20th.
